All entrepreneurs reach a point in their business where they are ready to grow. Ready to go beyond word of mouth to start marketing. Ready to build a team and start hiring. Ready to tighten up processes to take more clients by opening capacity. Ready to go beyond capacity to scale into a bigger business model. Before you can take advantage of any of these steps forward, you have to be… well, ready. Let’s talk about each.
Marketing. Before you can start marketing, you have to make sure your marketing message will be aligned with who you want to buy. To do that, you have to have clarity. Business clarity includes knowing exactly who you serve, what their pain points are, what transformation they want, and how they want to receive their transformation. With this clarity, your message will be received as though it were perfectly packaged just for them.
Hiring. Before you can start hiring, you have to set the people you are hiring up for success. To do that, you should have an official job description that spells out their duties, tested processes, procedures, and protocols for them to follow, a training plan for them to learn them, and a definition of what success looks like complete with key performance indicators (KPIs).
Opening Capacity. As a solo practitioner in your business, you need more support to open your capacity. Before you can open your capacity to take more clients for initial growth, you have to set the company up to handle that growth. To do that, you should have a well-oiled process for taking clients from onboarding to servicing to offboarding, know exactly how many clients you can take through your servicing process at a time, and have checks and balances in place to identify and solve client issues.
Scaling. With capacity, it’s about how many more clients you can service. With scale, it’s about how many other people you can add to service more clients than you could alone. To do that, you need an agency model where you have more practitioners, more support roles, leadership, and more roles for marketing and sales. To make all of that work, the processes, procedures, and protocols should be updated to optimize the use of all the new roles.
