One of the things that set a lot of businesses apart from the rest is having a signature thing. What does that mean? Glad you asked because it is a simple strategy with great results. Take your process that gets results and make it the thing you become known for… you know, when they think of need that thing they think of YOU. I’ve created 4 steps to get you started with your new signature thing.

  1. What is the transformation? You always start any and everything with clarity. Who is this process for and what problem does it solve it? The key is to make the focus singular: one person that will benefit from the solution to one main problem. The solution may bear fruit with more than one benefit but again the focus is on one problem. The example we will work with is from my business. As a Fractional Chief Operating Officer (FCOO), my one person is a small business Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and the main problem I solve is the smooth and free flowing of operations with the benefit of high production yielding high revenue.

  1. What are the steps to the transformation? Here is why it is important to pick one person for the transformation, different people would need different starting points and different variations of the steps. Serving one person, in particular, brings clarity. Now, what are the steps that you use to get your one person to the transformation? Map out the basic steps. Most likely, the steps to the transformation you bring can be complex. First, find the simple foundation for that complexity.  There are always nuances but what are the core steps? Going back to our example, I get CEOs to free-flowing operations that result in higher revenue production. My steps are to focus on the creation of resources, management of resources, checking the performance of the resources, and finally optimization of the resources.

  1. Make it sexy. I say make it sexy but what I really want is for it to be rememberable. You can make your transformational steps catchy by using alliteration (all steps start with the same letter), rhyming, or common root words (ending in the same sound or word). All of my example steps are about resources, but with a few tweaks I can use alliteration to make it sexy: change create to make, check to monitor, optimize to maximize. Now my sexy formula for small business operations is to “make, manage, monitor, and maximize resources.” In another example, I have a sexy formula for creating profit in small businesses using root words: credibility + visibility + bankability. 😊

  1. Get the word out. Now that you have clarity and a sexy formula for the transformation that you bring, it’s time to let everyone know about your signature thing! Use your sexy formula everywhere. Use it in your elevator pitch, as a tagline to your program name, in the copy of your bio and social media profiles, in marketing, in speeches… literally everywhere. Everyone that fits the description of your one person should hear about your transformation in the new sexy way you’ve created to describe your transformation. You officially have a signature thing, so let every know.
